SPIEL 2026 will occur as a live event between 22.10.2026 and 25.10.2026. The trade fair will be held at the Messe Essen in Essen, Germany.
SPIEL – A Brief Introduction
SPIEL has almost 40 years under its belt and within that time has risen to be a defining moment for players in the board game business, which in recent years has been in a state of revival. The international fair is based in Essen, Germany and occurs every October for four days. Edition after edition, SPIEL has not stopped growing. The edition in 2019 registered its highest-yet attendance – more than 1200 international exhibitors and 209,000 visitors in total at the modern exhibition halls of Messe Essen. Board games have long since evolved beyond being a simple children’s toy. SPIEL 2021
The 2021 edition of SPIEL took place as a hybrid event. The trade fair consisted of a face-to-face exposition and a complimentary digital platform. The edition featured around 600 exhibitors who presented more than 1000 new products. The strict Covid-19 prevention measures that were put in place at the Messe Essen included social distancing regulations.
SPIEL 2022
SPIEL 2022 was held as a face-to-face trade fair between 04.10.2022 and 09.10.2022 in Messe Essen. The venue did not include Covid-19 safety measures due to the removal of the related pandemic restrictions. The event received 147,000 visitors (a 53% increase in visitor participation rate compared to the previous edition) and 980 exhibitors from 56 nations. The exhibitors presented over 1,800 board games.
SPIEL 2023
SPIEL ESSEN 2023 occurred as a live trade fair between 05-08.10.2023. It took place in Messe Essen and, similar to the 2022 format, did not feature coronavirus precautions. The iteration was attended by approximately 200 000 attendants.
SPIEL 2024
SPIEL Essen 2024 was a live trade expo that occurred between 03-06.10.2024 in Messe Essen. It presented the wares of more than 900 exhibiting firms from 52 nations. It was attended by around 200 000 visitants.
SPIEL 2025
SPIEL Essen 2025 was a live trade expo hosted in Messe Essen between 23.10.2025 and 25.10.2025. The event was held on 77 500 m2 and presented more than 1 700 novel released via around 950 exhibiting firms from 50 nations. The trade expo featured 220 000 attendants.

The trip to the fair all went very well. I have had very little feedback, which is a good sign because I only hear when things go wrong.
However, I did ask. The hotel was basic (not luxurious) but in a good location for transport to the fair and they were happy with it.

Thank you for asking. This is the second time my colleagues stayed at this hotel because of its proximity to the fairgrounds and comfortable facilities.
We knew it thanks to Megan and already accommodated in 2022 during the same fair.
Compared to the previous time I was informed by colleagues that the treatment was not that good.
On the other hand, the treatment with Megan Moore has always been very correct and efficient. I hope to contact her for other alternatives next time.

We were very satisfied with the STAYERY Frankfurt Sachsenhausen. The rooms were great and the location worked very well for us. It took us around 20 minutes by car to reach CPHI in the morning, which was perfect.
The only very small downside is that our rooms were not all located close to each other – only 2 out of 4 colleagues had rooms next to each other. This is not a major issue at all, more of a small detail, but I am mentioning it as feedback.
I will try to complete the questionnaire later today.
Regarding your question about preliminary rates for next year, as far as we know, the 2026 edition of CPHI will be held in Milan, not in Frankfurt – which is why I am not sure I fully understand the proposal to review hotel rates for the same hotel next year. Could you clarify this point?

Good day Tom,
Yes, we have checked out of the H4 Hotel Hannover Messe and we have already successfully returned home! Now there is a lot of work to do with the contact we gained during LIGNA.
As for the hotel, everything was great! Rooms were very clean, beds were soft! We really liked the pool and sauna which was available for the guests - it was a great relaxation after a long day at the exhibition! The only minor issue we ran into was during the check-in. For some reason our bookings was marked as to stay in rooms with one double bed. Thankfully upon our arrival the hotel was not full and employees of the hotel were quick to resolve the mishap with the beds!

Thank you for email. Everything went well during our stay. The hotel allowed early check-in. Room is new and clean, but is too small, and the hotel is located in good location as it is convenient to public transportation and walking distance to the old town. Only few points, it's a bit noisy surrounding(from the road), especially at night. The room does not seal and not well sound protected. With the room rate it would be good if the hotel served BF. Thank you.
