Spain is one of the leading and time-honoured countries in the European and global maritime industry. This is due to the country featuring an extensive nautical cluster. It is due to its strategic position on the European continent, including the presence of 8 000 km of coastline. This enables the state to access diverse maritime routes. Such include passages to other continents such as Africa, the two Americas, Asia and Australia. As a result, the country features an extensive and comprehensive maritime sector. This includes the presence of 46 ports managed by 28 Port Authorities. They handle around 60% of exports and 85% of the imports. This comprised 53% of the Spanish foreign trade. It also contributes around 20% of the Spanish transportation industry’s GDP and thus 1.1% of the country’s GDP. This is due to the segment often generating turnovers of over 20 000 000 EUR. Such revenue is due to the high handling capacity of the country’s ports. For instance, in recent years, Spain’s ports have managed 548 000 000 tonnes of cargo. Due to its significance and extensiveness, the sector employs a significant number of specialists. For example, in recent years, it has engaged the services of around 100 000 experts directly and of approximately 175 000 personnel indirectly. Many of these specialists are focused on research and development. This is due to the Spanish maritime cluster placing a high emphasis on innovations. For instance, in recent years, it has invested approximately 260 000 000 EUR to research and implement innovations. This enables the segment to remain competitive. Often, it displays its latest novel solutions during biannual trade expositions. Such events attract thousands of participants.
