Switzerland is among the leading countries in the global chemical industry. The state features one of the most extensive and comprehensive chemical sectors. It is among the Swiss Federation’s central GDP contributors. This is due to around 7% of the country’s gross domestic product generated by the segment. This is due to the industry generating over 100 000 000 000 CHF of revenue annually. A significant value of this turnover is due to the exportation of chemical and pharmaceutical wares. 50% of the country’s exported goods comprise such wares. This results in generating revenues of over 130 870 000 000 CHF. Switzerland's chemical industry encompasses between 250 and 1 000 enterprises. They employ over 75 000 specialists. It is distributed into several clusters. These include subsectors such as pharmaceuticals, life sciences, speciality and fine chemicals. Most clusters are concentrated around urban centres such as Basel, Zug and Lucerne. The industry is also among the country's primary contributors to its R&D expenditures. For instance, its pharmaceutical enterprises have invested in recent years over 6 000 000 000 CHF in research and development. Generally, the industry presents its innovations during annual and biannual trade expositions. Such events attract tens of thousands of attendants.
