Rotterdam is considered one of the prominent cities and ports of the Dutch shipping industry. This is due to the strategic and pivotal position of the urban centre and port within the country. This results in the development of a comparatively extensive and high-value shipping segment. For example, the Rotterdam Port is the most comprehensive port on the European continent. It features 12 500 hectares of port area, including more than 6 000 hectares of industrial site. The length of the port area also spans over 40 kilometres. This results in the port freighting over 400 000 000 tonnes of cargo annually. Such values are handled by approximately 28 000 seagoing and 90 000 inland vessels annually. They are operated and tended to by more than 500 000 directly and indirectly employed specialists. They aid in the production of notably high turnover rates. These include, for example, in recent years, an added value of more than 60 000 000 000 EUR. It includes notable values produced by the Port of Rotterdam Authority, which employs around 1 300 specialists. It generates up to 30 600 000 000 EUR or 3.2% of the Dutch GDP. The Port Authority is also among the chief drivers of the segment’s central focus on research and development. This is due to the organisation investing notable values in the development of the segment. For example, in recent years, the Authority has invested a gross value of 295 000 000 EUR. Generally, the segment presents its latest innovations during trade expos. It includes annual events in Rotterdam that attract thousands of attendees from various countries.
