Oslo is among the central, leading and time-honoured cities in the Norwegian shipping industry. This is due to its strategic position in the country and its extensive water area. It features a 26.64 km2 (10.29 sq mi) of water area. It enables the city and its port to extend and feature around 980 enterprises, including organisations related to the Port of Oslo. As a result, the segment has developed to employ 8 500 specialists. It has also extended to produce an operating income of 448 600 000 NOK, with around 75% of the operating income produced by port-related activities. These include ship traffic, handling goods and passengers, et cetera. This results in the Port of Oslo handling up to 299 000 TEUs, a total cargo turnover of 5 900 000 tonnes and passenger traffic of 1 600 000 individuals. In addition, the region related to Oslo serves as one of the leading and central innovation hubs of the country’s shipping industry and its related segments, such as the overarching maritime sector. This is due to the cluster’s chief focus on research and development to adapt to the latest challenges. Generally, the segment presents its most recent innovations during trade expos.
